How to choose the right coaxial Cable-Material

 

1 Inner Conductor

SC(Silver Copper)

TC(Tined Copper)

BC(Bare Copper) or called CU have a good electrical performance and flexibility

CCA(Copper clad Aluminum) very Light but could be easier oxidized(rusted)

CCS(Copper clad steel) Cheap(price only 1/5 of BC) and not bad electrical performance

 

the cost is Silver copper>tinned copper>bare copper>Copper clad aluminum>Copper clad steel

 

2 Insulation

Solid PE/Foam PE/ Gas Injection PE

Currently there is two type of PE in the market for the Drop Cables,

Local PE(Chinese Manufacture)

Imported PE( DOW chemical..)

 

The main difference of the two type, is that Local PE is not pass the Oxidative induction time(OIT) Test, and the Crush resistant Test, which may required by the CATV company, but general the electrical performance is the same.

 

The price difference of the material is about 23%...

 

3 Foil Screen

Normally it is in three type

AL or copper foil not bonded to the insulation ---AP

AL or copper foil bonded to the insulation- Bonded Al/Pet(blue)- BAP(the most widely used)

AL/PET/AL foil bonded to the insulation- Bonded Al/Pet/AL- BAPA

I have meet some customer that want a copper color Al foil(some clients called golden foil), which is the same color of the copper foil, but it is Al foil. WOW--a lot lot cheaper,, scratch on the foil, you will see or burn it.

One more thing is the overlap of the foil, >2mm or >20%, you need to know from your supplier

 

4 Braiding

For the braiding wire, there is:

BC Copper wire,

TC Tinned copper wire,

SC Silvered copper wire,

CCA Copper clad Aluminum wire, looks like BC but could be easier oxidized(rusted)

AL Magnesium Aluminum Wire, (the most widely used)

the cost is Silver copper wire>tinned copper wire>copper wire>Copper clad aluminum wire> Aluminum wire

 

With a knife or lighter you can tell the difference

Another difference of the cost, is the braiding coverage, form 30%-95%, normally in the market is 48%, 60%, 77%, for the digital cable, is over 90%.

 

5 Jacket

The requirement for PVC included

1 Tensile strength before aging

2 Elongation before aging

3 Tensile strength after aging

4 Elongation after aging

5 Shrinkage

6 Heat shock

7 Cold bend

8 Cold Impact

9 UV Resistant

10 Fire resistant( include different grade, for north american market, there is CMX,CM,CMR/Riser,CMP/ Plenum, for European, it is IEC60332-1, IEC 60332-3, IEC60332-3C)

 

The more requirement you need, the more expensive the material.

For the Tropical area, you might just need the 1,2,9, and that would be enough,

For the cold area, you might need the 7, 8, but still you need to know your lowest temperature, other wire, the jacket will be break, and you have to reinstall, or get the customer complaint.

For commercial building , first resistant CMR, CMP is recommend.

 

Once more, for the fire resistant PVC , it is better to get the certification online check like UL/ETL, if they pass, you can find the relevant information of the company. and you might need to send it to test like half a year or once year from the mass production to be more sure
