What type of cable is used for CCTV?
Coaxial Cables:
Having been around for nearly a century now, coaxial cables are still quite relevant in today’s world mainly due to its high property shielding quality. The shielding helps in preventing any interference with the signal. The copper plate in such cables helps in quickening the transmission of data. It’s a lot easier to install, coming in some types for globle CCTVs: RG6, RG59, 3C2V,VR90, KX6 and so on.
Plug and Play / Video Power Cables:
Considered to be a cheaper option, PnP cables are quite straightforward. The CCTV’s power and video runs on one cable with the BNC (initialism of Bayonet Neill-Concelman) connectors present on each end. PnPs are ideal for situations that need quick fixing. It does not take a long time to fix and use, and is considered to be quite user-friendly.
Siamese Cables:
Siamese Cables are usually those that have certain power wires attached to them. While they are considered to be quite complicated to handle, it does, however, provide transmission of both data and power at the same time to security cameras. A combination of two cables, it is made up of RG59 and 18AWG/ 2 cable, the former for video transmission quality and the latter for power purposes. In other words, since RG59 is a coaxial cable, it helps in running the video to the security camera, whereas 18AWG/2 cable helps in the 12/24V AC/DC power to the camera. Also we can produce other types such as RG6+2C, KX7+2Alim Siamese cable, and network with power combo cable: CAT5E+2C and CAT6+2C.
Optic Fiber Cables:
These cables are considered to be the most expensive option, with its installations taking up a lot of time and manpower. While it provides better quality frequency and signal, it still comes at a cost and can be fragile. However, the data and signal transmissions are so high that it outweighs its cons. Perhaps what sets them apart is the fact that they are comprised of glass tubes along with the plastic insulation. This particular cable is usually preferred for professional set-ups as it’s considered too expensive for residential and other places.
Twisted Pair Cables:
This cable, CAT5E adn CAT6, made up of two insulated copper wires or CCA wire twisted around each other, is usually used for audio purposes, but it has been used by many in terms of video surveillance. Bearing its short length in mind, twisted pair cables are easier to install but that can also play to its disadvantage. Signal interference may happen frequently and aren’t as durable as one would expect.
